The novel is about a sixteen-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen, who has volunteered in place of her sister to join the annual Hunger Games. This is the time when each of the 12 districts is required to send one boy and one girl as a representative to fight to the death on live TV by the Capitol to flaunt their power.
Katniss is far from helpless though as she is a fine hunter, she uses a bow to scout for food illegally in the forest with her best friend Gale. She lives a hard life, but is content with providing for her mother and sister since her dad died. But her quaint life suddenly changed when she got involved in the Hunger Games, an arena where everyone is out to make sure she doesn't get to see the morning.
